This afternoon the Wood Land School faculty and participants had the opportunity to visit the Manitoba Museum and its vault, alongside scholar and author Sherry Farrell Racette. Prior to the visit, the group discussed the ways in which institutional terminology can directly impact a viewer's perception of museum-held items, artifacts, and works of art. The concept of recognizing indigenous historical objects as works of art as opposed to historical artifacts is one that has been largely developed in recent curatorial projects, notably including Jaimie Isaac's exhibition at the Winnipeg Art Gallery We Are On Treaty Land (2015-16). Thank you so much Sherry for the tour!

of terminology in the understanding of a work of art
